Breaking the cycle: Hope and recovery through MAT services

Breaking the cycle: Hope and recovery through MAT services

Across Pwani and Tanga regions in Tanzania, a profound transformation is underway. Individuals once trapped in the cycle of addiction and marginalization are reclaiming their health, dignity, and future through Medically Assisted Therapy (MAT).

For people who use or inject drugs, stigma, illness, and social exclusion have long stood between them and a healthy life. The MAT program — combining evidence-based medication such as methadone, counselling, HIV and TB testing, and psychosocial support — is not just treatment: it’s a lifeline.

Lives Rebuilt, Families Restored

The documentary portrays real stories of recovery — men and women who have broken free from the grip of opioid dependence. With compassionate clinical care and consistent support, many participants have restored relationships with loved ones, found renewed purpose, and taken steps toward meaningful community engagement.

Integrated, Holistic Care

MAT services in Tanga and Pwani are designed not in isolation, but as part of a comprehensive health response. Alongside dosing, clients receive counselling, HIV and TB screening, and connections to broader health services — all in a supportive, non-judgmental environment.

This integrated approach has played a vital role in enhancing public health outcomes — from reducing risky behaviours to expanding access to essential testing and care.

A Community-Led Movement

Through collaboration with local health systems, community volunteers, and civil society, the program has enrolled over a thousand individuals on the path to recovery. Peer outreach and community support not only help people start treatment, but keep them engaged, motivated, and connected to opportunities for healing and growth.

Hope in Action

What was once a story of repeated loss and despair has become one of courage, resilience, and hope. The faces in this documentary are living proof: when people are given care grounded in respect, expertise, and empathy, recovery is not just possible — it thrives.
