New Study Reveals Critical Insights into the Impact of Test-and-Treat Policy on HIV Treatment Interruptions in Tanzania.

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. 16 November, 2023 – A recent study looking at program data, “Interruptions in Treatment among Adults on Anti-Retroviral Therapy Before and After Test-and-Treat Policy in Tanzania,” has shed light on the implementation and effects of the test-and-treat policy for HIV in Tanzania. The study evaluated the impact of this policy on HIV treatment continuity, especially regarding treatment interruptions. The findings offer important insights into the challenges and opportunities in ensuring uninterrupted HIV treatment. The study that was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Redempta Mbatia, the Director of the Tanzania Health Promotion Support (THPS), in collaboration with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has just been published in PLOS ONE.

THPS holds a health forum on NCD integration in HIV prevention , care and treatment services

On October 5, 2023 during Tanzania Health Summit held at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre , THPS through CDC/PEPFAR Afya Hatua Project conducted a health forum on Integrated  Care for Non-Communicable Diseases in HIV Prevention, Care and Treatment.

The forum attended by  over 200 participants had the following presentations:

  1. “Strategic investment towards integrating NCD services in HIV prevention, care and treatment clinics in Pwani, Shinyanga and Kigoma.” Presented by CDC Director in Tanzania, Mahesh Swaminathan.
  2. “The burden of NCDs among Recipients of Care in HIV prevention, care and treatment clinics in Pwani, Shinyanga and Kigoma.” Presented by THPS Research and Evaluation Technical Advisor, Ola Farid.
  3. “Historical perspective, current situation and recommendations on primordial and primary prevention of NCDs among Recipients of Care in Tanzania” Presented by the Principal Research Officer and Director of Research Information and Regulatory Affairs of NIMR, Dr. Mary Mayige.
  4. “Towards achieving universal health coverage, government’s approaches to ensure sustainability of the treatment and rehabilitation for Recipients of Care with NCD co-morbidities.” Presented by Coordinator of Research and Publications at PORALG, Dr. James Kengia.

THE US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through Tanzania Health Promotion Support (THPS) has successfully facilitated the HIV viral load suppression by 100 per cent to 13 patients enrolled at the Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) centre at Tumbi-regional referral hospital in Coast Region.

Through support from PEPFAR, USAID, CDC and the Global Fund; THPS has joined other national stakeholders to commemorate International World AIDS Day week marked at Ilulu grounds in Lindi region from 24th November to 1st December, 2022. This years’ theme “Equalize” aims at encouraging everyone to eliminate disparities and inequities that create barriers to HIV prevention, testing and access to HIV care and treatment towards achieving epidemic control by 2030.
