Dr. Jimson Mgaya

Dr Jimson Mgaya is the Zonal Technical Manager for the USAID Police and Prisons Activity in the Central and Southern Zone. He is responsible for providing leadership, management, technical support, monitoring and evaluation in implementing the USAID Police and Prisons Activity for comprehensive HIV and TB prevention, care and treatment services in the central and southern zones.

Dr Mgaya has over 12 years of experience in managing clinical research and public health programs, especially on HIV, TB and cervical cancer screening implemented in collaboration with the Government of Tanzania through the Ministry of Health and President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government, US Military Research Program, Ludwig Maximillian University of Munich and HIV Vaccine Trials Network.

Before joining THPS, Dr Mgaya worked at the HJF Medical Research International, implementing the PEPFAR HIV Prevention, Care and Treatment Program in Mbeya, Songwe, Rukwa, Katavi and Ruvuma regions under the agency of the US Department of Defence (DoD). 

While there, he served in different positions such as Regional Clinical Coordinator for Songwe, Program Manager for Mbeya, Viral Load and CECAP Coordinator and lastly as Technical Advisor responsible for the PMTCT and Cervical Cancer Screening Program in the Southern Highlands Zone. 

Additionally, Dr Mgaya had a 7-year stint at the National Institute for Medical Research where he worked as a Research Scientist with the Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital to establish the first HIV second-line clinic.

He holds a Master of Science in Applied Epidemiology from the University of Nottingham, UK and Doctor of Medicine from the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Tanzania.
