Dr. Karugira Y. Rweyemamu

Dr. Karugira Y. Rweyemamu is a public health specialist with 12 years of diverse experience. He currently works as Chief of Party of the USAID Police and Prisons Activity at THPS.In this role, he is the primary technical and management lead for the Activity’s program focusing on the provision of quality comprehensive HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and treatment support services to police and prison staff, their families, prisoners, and the surrounding communities.

He also leads and coordinates strategic planning, program development and management, and oversees the implementation and evaluation of all activities related to this program.

Before this position, he worked as a Technical Manager for the USAID Police and Prisons Activity for three years.

Dr. Karugira possesses strong organizational and managerial proficiencies, underscored by the successful oversight of health initiatives targeting children, pregnant women, key vulnerable populations, and even uniformed settings such as Police and Prisons.

For over a decade, Dr Karugira has assumed leadership roles, competently fulfilling technical and managerial duties in District Health Management and in pivotal areas such as surveillance, HIV/AIDS, TB programs, and vaccination, including the ongoing COVID-19 response.  

A few years after launching his career as a medical doctor, Dr. Karugira rose to the position of Medical Officer in charge of Kongwa District Hospital in Dodoma region. He later joined HJFMRI Reed Project Tanzania where he worked as Regional Clinical Coordinator for Rukwa and Katavi regions for two years before being promoted to the position of Regional Program Manager.

Dr. Karugira holds a Medical Degree and Master’s in Applied Edipemiology from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences.
