Dr. Redempta Mbatia

Is the current and founding Executive Director of Tanzania Health Promotion Support (THPS); an indigenous NGO since 2012. She has altogether more than 32 years’ professional experience in clinical medicine, public health project management research and academics. Across the years her professional focus has been in donor funded public health project management focusing on HIV and Tuberculosis prevention, care and treatment; maternal and neonatal health, sexual and reproductive health; gender mainstreaming; HIV prevention, treatment and harm reduction among key and vulnerable populations; Malaria and non-communicable diseases.

 Such projects and public health evaluations received funding from PEPFAR, US CDC, USAID, US NIH, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, World Bank, Global Fund, UNAIDS and US based Universities (Harvard School of Public Health, Columbia University and University of Minnesota). She has supervised implementation of over 15 grants/donor funded programs targeting areas highlighted above across Tanzania in over 700 health facilities in Tanzania. 

Dr Mbatia is experienced in working in partnership with governments/public sector through ministries of health in mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, Local Government ministry and NGOs in implementing public health programs to ensure high impact and efficiencies in resource limited settings. She is skilled in policy development, start-up and scaling up of public health programs in underserved areas through strategic planning, project oversight, and health facility and community systems strengthening. Dr. Mbatia maintains regular communication with government ministries; Donors and other key government and nongovernment partners, and represents THPS in national and international fora.

Dr. Mbatia ensures overall organizational performance and achievement, and is responsible for advancing the organization’s mission and objectives. She currently oversees program operations, with an annual budget of $ 26 million, and manages 170 THPS staff to ensure effective service delivery.  She also serves as Secretary of the THPS Board of Director

Dr Mbatia completed Medical Degree at the University of Dar es Salaam in 1987; undertook postgraduate training in Internal Medicine at Technical University of Munich, Germany (1988-90) , and fellowship in Cardiology at the University of London; St Thomas Hospital UK (1990-1993).  Dr. Mbatia received her MSC in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK in 2004.
