Cervical Cancer Screening

THPS continues supporting expansion of initial care package for HIV positive women of reproductive age to include cervix cancer screening. This has contributed to reduction of mother to child transmission (MTCT) and cervical cancer burden in the country through supporting routine HIV testing and cervical cancer screening to pregnant and breastfeeding women attending Antenatal Care (ANC) at THPS supported facilities in Kigoma and Pwani regions. The support is through:

  • training of health care providers on HIV counselling and testing
  • cervical cancer screening using Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA)
  • placement of screening equipment for VIA, cryotherapy (freezing with liquid carbon dioxide) and for bigger lesions Loop electrosurgical excision procedures (LEEP)
  • supportive supervision and mentorship on the identified challenges.

Achievements

  • THPS supported 38 cervical cancer-screening sites with frequent outreach services in Pwani and Kigoma.
  • By June 2021, THPS reached and screened a total of 6,706 HIV positive women. These results represent 53% of the FY 20/21 Direct Services Delivery target of 12,602
