Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) and Early Infant Diagnosis (EID)
In response to the Global and National call for elimination of mother to child transmission of HIV, THPS enhanced transition of service delivery model for PMTCT programs and scaled up Option B plus interventions to over 500 health facilities; whereby health care providers in all PMTCT/EID sites were trained on provision of lifelong antiretroviral treatment to HIV infected pregnant and breastfeeding women.
PMTCT programme Objective
- To reduce Mother To Child Transmission (MTCT) of HIV and to improve care for infected parents and children by introducing and scaling up comprehensive PMTCT services within all facilities providing RCH services.
Achievements
Country data shows MTCT rate of above 5% which is also the case in THPS supported regions. However, program data from 121 supported Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) facilities by June 2020 shows the MTCT rate of 1%. (PMTCT program data Q3 April-June 2020) Table 1 below. In provision of PMTCT services, THPS provided counselling, testing services and gave test results to 19,497(89%) pregnant and breastfeeding women that were attended at ANC and RCH. Among them 127(0.7%) were found to be HIV infected, and 100% were initiated on ART.
