Prevention of Gender Based Violence

THPS has integrated Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Violence against Children (VAC) intervention as part of comprehensive care and treatment services in Afya Kwanza supported facilities at Pwani and Kigoma regions. Through collaborations with Regional/ Council Health Management Teams(R/CHMTs), People Living with HIV (PLHIV) are equally reached, sensitized, supported and have access to GBV services at the supported health facilities.

Program Objectives

  • To increase awareness and skills to health care providers on provision of post GBV/VAC care and delivery of quality health services
  • To strengthen integration of GBV/VAC services to health care providers in health facilities
  • To strengthen use of Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives in provision of quality post GBV care
  • To Improve coordination and sustainability of the national GBV response in the project regions involving key stakeholders

Implemented activities

1. Mentorship, on site orientation and field supervision

THPS Afya Kwanza program in collaboration with R/CHMTs conducted/VAC supportive supervision, mentorship and on job training to health care providers using Quality Assurance tool and National supportive supervision tool with key focus on:

  • Integration of post GBV and VAC services at health service delivery points (i.e. provision of GBV and VAC in Out Patient Departments, Care and Treatment Clinics and Reproductive and Child Health departments
  • Initiated GBV effective referrals system from facility level to other stakeholders on GBV and VAC cases
  • Addressing challenges that threatened health care providers on integration approach and GBV and VAC data reporting in DHIS2. 

2. Dissemination and distribution of GBV tools

THPS Afya Kwanza distributed GBV tools for proper data management and accurate reporting at 119 health facilities in 17 councils.

The Program collaborated with the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MOHCDGEC)- Reproductive and Child Health Services (RCHS) Sections of Gender and Adolescents/Youth departments and other implementing partners (IPs) in Gender- Technical Working Group meeting to share and discuss updates and implementation of gender issues.

Key Achievements

  • Mentorship and supportive supervision have contributed to improved quality of services, documentation and reporting of post GBV services in line with the MOHCDGEC minimum package.
  • All supported health facilities reported accurate GBV and VAC data on time in DHIS2.
  • More GBV and VAC data captured during reporting period.
  • Strong collaboration with R/CHMTs on GBV activities. There is ownership of the GBV and VAC cases by the health care providers and stronger linkage between the police, social welfare officers and health care providers
  • To date 614 health care providers from 119 care and treatment are trained/mentored on prevention of gender-based violence and providing services to GBV and VAC victims. 14467 clients have been reached with services as of Dec 2020. Whereas Physical violence and/ or Emotional violence clients 11261 (78%) and Sexual violence 3206 clients (22%) as indicated graph below
