USAID Uhuru Activity

On July 1st 2020, Tanzania Health Promotion Support (THPS) was awarded by USAID/ Tanzania a Cooperative Agreement to implement a 5 Years Activity named “USAID – Uhuru; Tuberculosis and Family Planning Facility Solutions LON Activity”. The project is implemented in  Katavi, Kigoma, Rukwa and Songwe regions in west and southwestern Tanzania.

‘Uhuru’ means freedom in Kiswahili – THPS envisions that through collaboration with the Government of Tanzania i.e. Ministry of Health Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MOHCDGEC) and Presidents Office- Regional Administration and Local Government (PO-RALG), USAID Tanzania, other Stakeholders  and communities; individuals of all ages and gender in the four regions will attain ‘freedom from TB and freedom to choose quality reproductive health services including planning their  families’ by September 2025.

Inception meeting with partners in Kigoma region

As the prime recipient, THPS implements this Activity with three other Tanzanian NGOs: Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation Tanzania, Ifakara Health Institute (IHI) and MKUTA, a nationwide NGO network of CBOs consisting of ex-TB patient advocates/volunteers. The USAID Uhuru TB & FP LON Activity will improve access to and use of quality Tuberculosis (TB) and family planning (FP) services for better health outcomes for Tanzanian citizens in Katavi, Kigoma, Rukwa and Songwe regions; all having suboptimal uptake of health services compared to other regions and receive limited support for TB and FP services from existing USAID/Tanzania programs.

Our three intermediate results (IR) in this Activity are: 1) Access to and use of high quality, person centered TB, DR-TB and TB/HIV services at facility level improved, 2) TB disease transmission and progression reduced through facility-based service delivery and 3) Access to and use of quality FP services at facility level strengthened.
