ART refill outreach services enhance treatment adherence among recipients of care in Tandala Village

The introduction of community antiretroviral therapy (ART) refill services in Tandala Village, located in Uvinza District, Kigoma region, has significantly improved healthcare access for recipients of care, eliminating the burden of travelling 50 kilometres to the Uvinza Health Centre for treatment services.

This monthly outreach program, supported by the PEPFAR/CDC Afya Hatua Project and implemented by THPS, provides comprehensive HIV care services which include HIV viral load sample collection, biometric registration, screening for non-communicable diseases and TB, and providing TB preventive therapy for eligible individuals.

Dr. Saidi Saidi, the HIV Care and Treatment Clinic Officer in Charge at Uvinza Health Centre, highlighted the holistic approach taken during these outreach services.

“During this outreach clinic, we provide the recipients of care with all necessary care and treatment services, including biometric registration and screening for non-communicable diseases and TB,” he said.

As of June 2024, a total of 28 recipients of care had been registered to receive community ART refill services through the monthly outreach conducted in Tandala Village.

Among the beneficiaries is Joshua Zengo, who has been receiving ART services at Uvinza Health Centre since 2018. He shared how the outreach, introduced in 2024, improved his adherence to ART medication and overall well-being.

“Previously, I had to spend TZS 12,000 (US$4.50) on a one-way journey to the Uvinza Health Centre. Sometimes, I couldn’t afford the bus fare, which led to missed appointments,” Zengo said.

“Now, with services available within walking distance, I no longer incur transport costs. This has led to improved adherence to treatment. As a result, I have achieved viral load suppression, leading to better health and an increased ability to support my family through farming activities,” he added.

The support of the Afya Hatua Project for community ART refill services not only enhances treatment adherence but also improves the overall quality of life for recipients of care. This initiative aligns with global efforts to ensure equitable access to healthcare services for people living with HIV, especially those in hard-to-reach areas.

By bringing essential health services closer to the community, THPS continues to contribute to achieving HIV epidemic control and improving health outcomes in Tanzania.
